The Library Board makes sure that library services are delivered efficiently and effectively—with an eye to the future. Board Trustees are volunteers from the community that Burlington City Council appoints after a competitive selection process. Board members serve a four-year term.

The Board provides governance and leadership, asking big questions, solving problems, and offering direction to BPL's directors. They:

  • make policies for library and board operations
  • guide major projects and plan for the library's future
  • together with the CEO, prepare an annual budget and present it to Burlington City Council
  • monitor finances and make sure the library makes sound financial decisions
  • promote and advocate for public libraries in Burlington and beyond
  • hire the Chief Executive Officer and evaluate their performance

To represent the community well, members must be well-informed, attend meetings regularly, and participate fully in Board discussions and decisions.

The Public Libraries Act outlines what is expected of a Library Board in Ontario.

All meetings start at 6:30pm. Members of the public are welcome to attend and watch the proceedings. For login information to attend a meeting virtually via Zoom, please submit a Contact Us form, and we'll be in touch. Only Board members may attend closed sessions in a meeting.
