Your Guide to Using MakerSpace
Whether you're creating your very first project or you're an experienced maker, MakerSpace at Central Branch is a place to explore, experiment, and bring your ideas to life. Every maker starts somewhere, and learning new skills is all part of the experience.
Unlike a custom print or sign shop, MakerSpace isn't a place to hand over a project and return for a finished product. It's a creative studio where you’ll design and create your project yourself—with friendly staff there to guide and support you along the way.
To help you get the most from your visit, here are a few things to keep in mind before you book your time in Central's MakerSpace.
You Don't Need to Be an Expert
MakerSpace's All Levels Access hours are open to everyone, from complete beginners to experienced makers. Our staff are here to welcome you, answer questions, help you get started with the equipment, and troubleshoot along the way. Don't worry if you've never used a laser cutter, vinyl printer, or sewing machine before—we'll help guide you.
Learning Takes Time
The biggest surprise for many first-time makers isn't using the equipment—it's creating the design.
Whether you're making a sign, sticker, engraving, or custom project, preparing the design often takes longer than the actual production. Then, once you're ready to make it, equipment like laser cutters and 3D printers can take longer than expected to complete a job.
Giving yourself plenty of time makes for a much more enjoyable experience.
It's Okay to Learn in Stages
You don't have to master everything in one visit.
Many customers book multiple sessions while they're learning, building their skills one project at a time. Starting with a simple project is one of the best ways to gain confidence before tackling something more ambitious.
Take a Class First
If you're new to MakerSpace, consider registering for one of our introductory classes or workshops. They're designed to teach both the equipment and the creative workflow behind a project, making your first independent visit much easier and more enjoyable.
Book the Right Equipment
Not every machine is suited to every project. If you're unsure which equipment you need, just ask us before booking. We're happy to point you in the right direction so you can make the most of your appointment.
A Space to Create
Central's MakerSpace is a self-service creative studio where your ideas take centre stage. Staff are here to guide and support you as you learn new skills, but each project is designed and created by you. The satisfaction of making something yourself is one of the best parts of the maker experience.
Bring your curiosity, be prepared to experiment, and don't be afraid to make a few mistakes along the way. That's how every maker learns—and we're here to help and guide your maker journey.
