Save Money With the Library

Is the high cost of living squeezing your budget? Swap a few of your spendy habits out for free alternatives from Burlington Public Library—your wallet will thank you.

While the Bank of Canada is cautiously optimistic about this year’s economy, we’re still feeling the hit from the high prices and interest rates that made headlines in 2023. Whatever positive outlook the pundits are predicting, keeping an eye on your budget is always an excellent plan.

Burlington Public Library may not be able to help you find savings at the gas station or grocery store, but it offers many free services and resources that can save you money.

Start Saving Today

As BPL CEO Lita Barrie will tell you, your FREE library membership card is the best deal in town—and the best way to save the most!

“Anyone who lives, works, or studies in Burlington can get a card at no cost,” says Barrie, “And everyone—members and non-members alike—is always welcome to attend Library programs and enjoy our spaces.”

Here are a few simple ways you can start saving today.

Books

Burlington Public Library members can borrow dozens of new and popular titles at a time. The Library offers print and digital copies of the hottest items and has borrowing agreements with other local libraries so you can access their eBooks and audiobooks, too. Books are pricey! If you can wait a few extra weeks for a new release, you can save big money at the library.

According to Barrie, you can actually track your savings. “Next time you borrow an item from our physical collection, take a look at your checkout receipt to see how many dollars you saved by using your library!”

Streaming

Many of us have already ditched the cable bill. But the cost of streaming services adds up, especially when you subscribe to several. With your Burlington Public Library card, you can stream movies and TV shows for adults and kids. BPL offers several streaming subscriptions Hoopla and Kanopy, where you can find series to binge-watch, insightful documentaries, and feature films worthy of a movie night in.

Programs & Activities

Pay to play? Not at Burlington Public Library. BPL’s events and programs are free of charge. The Library has a full calendar of exciting activities, including STEAM workshops and a hands-on DiscoverySpace for curious kids, adult technology classes for beginners and beyond, and engaging author talks for all ages. Plan your weekly entertainment at the library and save a bundle!

And you don’t need to join a scheduled program to have a fun day out at the library. Choose your own adventure and plan a library date—create in our MakerSpace, hunt for the perfect book to swap with a pal, or browse historic newspapers.

Spaces

The Library is one of the few remaining spots you can visit without having to spend a single cent of your hard-earned cash. BPL’s branches are toasty in the winter and cool in the summer and always comfortable places to relax, meet a friend, get some desk work done, or spend time with your kids. Wi-Fi and parking are also free at all BPL locations.

This list barely scratches the surface of all the free resources you can find at your library. Want to learn more? Come visit us!
