Explore & Play the BPL Way
Fresh air, movement, and perhaps a little friendly competition—taking time to play, no matter the season, is good for you! That’s why we’re excited to introduce BPL's new Outdoor Play collection.
Formerly known as the City of Burlington Play Equipment Lending Library, this games and gear collection is now part of the library’s Explore & Play Collection that BPL members can borrow for free. Thank you to the City of Burlington for providing the items as part of the transition of its equipment lending library to BPL.
Because the collection launched during the snowy season, winter equipment is available first, with summer outdoor gear arriving in spring 2026. That means there’s something new to look forward to as the season changes!
What Can You Borrow Right Now?
The winter launch includes a variety of items that are perfect for snowy days and cold-weather fun.
Current items include snowshoes in multiple sizes, child-sized toboggans, snow play kits, trekking poles, and a mix of large-format games like giant dominoes, outdoor matching cards, ring toss, bean bag toss, and more—great for backyard play, park visits, or family gatherings.
With warmer weather on the horizon, expect summer favourites like pickleball, horseshoes, badminton, bocce, and other outdoor games to join the collection this spring.
How Borrowing Works
Borrowing from the Outdoor Play collection is simple and stress-free:
- Free to borrow with your Burlington Public Library card.
- Borrow and return items to Alton Branch.
- No deposit is required.
- First-come, first-served (items can’t be placed on hold or booked in advance).
- Loan period: 7 days, no renewals
- Borrow up to three Outdoor Play items at a time.
To keep everything in great condition for the next borrower, items must be returned directly to staff—not in a drop box or return slot. Staff will quickly check that everything is in good working order before the items head back into circulation.
Before borrowing, customers are asked to read the Outdoor Play Collection Terms & Conditions, which outline safe use and care of the equipment.
Where to Find the Collection
All Outdoor Play items are housed at Alton Branch. To browse what’s available before you visit, visit the library’s website and look under RESOURCES > Explore & Play Collection. You’ll see a dedicated section for Winter Outdoor Play items that can be borrowed now.
Availability is updated in the online catalogue, so you can check before you head out to the library.
