We will carefully consider all suggestions received within our annual collections development plan, and attempt to fill your request either by purchasing the title or by borrowing it from another library through interlibrary loan.

Q: Does the library purchase every title requested?
No. For a number of reasons, including the budget, the library is unable to order every requested item. Purchase decisions are made using a number of criteria. For more information, please read our Collection Development Policy. If we are unable to purchase the item, we will contact you.
Q: Will I be notified if my request is purchased?
If the title is purchased, a hold will be placed for you. If your library record is current and correct, you will be notified when the hold is available.
Q: How far in advance do you order new titles?
The library orders titles that are within six months of publication. Often times publication dates or titles change, so ordering any sooner may delay the actual purchase. Most titles by bestselling authors are ordered by the library months before publication.
DVDs and Blu-ray titles can’t be ordered until a release date is available. Most blockbuster and popular movies are ordered weeks before their release date and holds may be placed at that time. Requests for a DVD without a release date will not be kept on file.

Q: What is interlibrary loan?
Our interlibrary loan service is available only to Burlington Public Library card holders. When we don't own a title you want, we may be able to borrow it for you from another library system if it meets the loan criteria and is not available to borrow from neighbouring libraries: Hamilton Public Library and the public libraries serving Halton Region.
Q: What can I borrow?
To be eligible for interlibrary loan consideration, requested items must be:
- print only; no audio-visual items
- older than 3 years
- not held in the public library collections in Hamilton, Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills
- not held in the Kilbride Public School or Hayden Secondary School collections
- available from Ontario public, academic, and archival libraries (includes microfilm) only; there will be no out-of-province borrowing or lending.
Q: Are there any additional restrictions?
In addition to the above points, these items cannot be borrowed:
- video games
- complete magazine issues
- school course material
When you request a title that meets all eligibility criteria, please submit the online form below and we will attempt to fill the request through interlibrary loan, to a maximum of five requests per customer each month.
Q: How long does it take to get a requested item?
It can take between two to four weeks and sometimes longer to obtain an item through interlibrary loan.
Q: How long can items be borrowed?
The loan period is three weeks and begins as soon as the material has been received at Burlington Public Library. To have the longest loan period, pick up your item as soon as you know it is available.
Q: Is it possible to renew an interlibrary loan?
Interlibrary loan items cannot be renewed.
Q: Are there any charges?
This service is FREE when borrowing items from Ontario public libraries but academic libraries usually charge $10-$35
