Meet Alda, Maker-in-Residence

photo collage plus aldaWe are so excited to welcome artist Alda Escareño to Burlington Public Library as our first Maker-in-Residence.

Hailing from Toronto, Alda is a recent Masters of Design graduate from the Ontario College of Art & Design University (OCAD U). Her major thesis project, The Joy of Laser Cutting, stemmed from her desire to make digital manufacturing more appealing and accessible to people for creative exploration.

Along with her art training, Alda brings two years of experience as an in-class technician at the OCAD U Rapid Prototyping Lab, where she introduced new users to digital manufacturing and taught laser cutting classes through the OCAD U continuing studies department.

In her own practice, Alda looks for ways to push digital manufacturing in new directions, exploring how it can be combined with hand assembly and finishing techniques. It was the possibility of working collaboratively with the public while also experimenting with and developing her art that drew Alda to this Maker-in-Residence opportunity.

During the 12 weeks Alda is at BPL, she will work on her own project and run free public programs. At designated times every week, you’ll have a chance to chat with and watch the artist while she works. If you’re fans of Facebook or Instagram, you can follow Alda’s maker adventures on the Library’s social media.

Alda's own project for the 12-week residency is to create over 200 oversized colourful waterdrops using the laser cutter and other makerspace equipment. She’ll be encouraging library visitors of all skill levels to participate in the creation of her project—entitled “Thaw”—that will be displayed at Central branch. We can’t wait to see it!
