***

Burlington Public Library is looking for a Maker-in-Residence to inspire local residents—helping them go from zero to maker!—while pursuing a creative project of their own.

This residency is for a seasoned maker who can excite customers about 3D modelling and 3D printing. If terms like “MakerBot Replicator Z18” and “polylactic acid” speak to you, then we’d love to talk!

As our 3D Maker-in-Residence, you will lead public programs and help library users one-on-one, train library staff on the 3D printer, and conduct research to help guide the future of 3D at the library. You’ll also develop and create an independent project, which you will publicly present within the library at the end of the residency.

Overview

  • The residency is for a 17-week term, beginning September 2018.
  • You will spend 16 hours/week on-site
  • Your time will be divided between our Alton and Central branches; you may be required to run a program at a neighbourhood branch or a partner organization.
  • The library is open 7 days/week with evening hours; work schedule is negotiable.

Selection

The Maker-in-Residence will be chosen based on:

  • The quality of their portfolio, demonstrating skill in 3D modelling using Fusion360, Rhino3D, Blender or a similar software
  • The originality of the proposed project, and its feasibility within the residency timeframe
  • Their ability to teach software and design skills to customers of all ages and abilities, in workshops and one-on-one
  • Their skill in 3D printing and ability to troubleshoot the 3D printer
  • Their ability in research and report writing
  • Their customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Their eagerness and ability to inspire creativity
  • Their awareness of BPL Brand Values and WHMIS health and safety practices.

The successful candidate will receive an honorarium of $400 per week, to be paid in four instalments ($6,800/term). You will be responsible for your own transportation, meals, and lodging for the residency period.

How to apply

Application deadline: Fri July 13, 2018, 6pm

Please submit your résumé, two letters of reference from persons familiar with your work, a link to a website/portfolio, and a cover letter that touches on the following:

  • Who are you and why are you interested in this residency?
  • Tell us about your project and your execution plan for completing it during the 17-week residency.
  • What equipment and resources will you need?
  • Do you have any experience running workshops? Please share ideas about how you will engage customers of all ages.
  • Do you have experience conducting research and writing reports?

Applications will be accepted in person or by email until 6pm on July 13 to:
