light bulbHelp shape the future of public library service in our community as a Library Board Trustee.

Burlington Public Library is currently accepting applications to serve on the Library Board from Summer 2017 to February 2019.

Responsibilities of the Library Board

  • Establish policies in compliance with government legislation and regulations providing the framework for the operations of the library and of the Board itself
  • Provide comprehensive, effective and efficient public library service that reflects the community’s needs and builds community capacity.
  • Set the vision, mission and strategic direction of the library and monitor all short and long range plans and the strategies to implement them
  • Oversee the financial affairs of the library and ensure the organization operates on an ethical and sound financial basis
  • Assess all relevant information regarding the library service needs of the community and the level of available funding and achieve a balance between them
  • Hire and evaluate a qualified Chief Executive Officer to implement the strategic plan and to oversee the library operations

Roles of Library Board Trustees

Along with the governance, legal and fiscal roles, Library Board Trustees are expected to support and participate in community engagement by:

  • Establishing the library as an essential community service
  • Building community pride in the library
  • Advocating the library’s role in the community
  • Maintaining an open dialogue with the community
  • Building strong relationships with municipal council
  • Developing strategic partnerships with community groups and leaders

The trustee’s job requires the ability to work towards a vision and to think in broad, future-oriented terms while maintaining a commitment to move vision to reality.
