Southern Ontario Library Services (SOLS), a library service funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, recently announced that they are suspending their Interlibrary Loan Service effective Fri April 26, 2019.
Please note: Interlibrary Loan (ILLO) was a lending and borrowing service between libraries in Ontario, accessible only through our Request a Title web page. This is not the same as Burlington Public Library customers requesting to borrow a BPL item from another BPL branch—we still happily fulfill your hold requests on items in our collection!
What does this mean for you?
Burlington Public Library customers who have:
- Items currently on loan to you through Interlibrary Loan: please return the item(s) to your local branch by the due date, as usual. Renewals and extended loan periods are not available.
- Current requests for an item through Interlibrary Loan but have not yet received it: all requests are cancelled.
If not ILLO…?
Building a better Burlington collection
We appreciate that access to this service has been valued by BPL customers over the years. We want to reassure you that, although access to library collections across Ontario is suspended, our commitment to providing the Burlington community with a library collection geared to your greatest interests and needs is our top priority.
This year, we are introducing new ways to build and manage our physical and online collections. In mid-May, we launch CloudLibrary express eBooks and Netflix-like Kanopy, two exciting new online collections.
As always, we welcome suggestions for purchase for our collection by BPL customers through our online Request a Title form. We will carefully consider all suggestions received within the collective framework of our annual collections development plan.
Reciprocal Borrowing from local library systems
Burlington Public Library customers enjoy reciprocal borrowing privileges with other public libraries, which allows you to borrow a limited number of items from neighbouring library systems in Oakville, Milton, Halton Hills, and Hamilton.
If you cannot find the library item you want in Burlington, please visit the online catalogues of neighbouring libraries to see if they have the item in their collection. Once you have registered with a partner library as a reciprocal borrower, you can place holds and borrow directly from that system.
