Family Literacy Day

Family Literacy Day (Jan 27) promotes the importance of adults and children reading together to strengthen family ties and encourage lifelong learning. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative. ABC creates free learning and promotional resources for anyone that wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

This year's theme is Travel the World Together. Use your imagination to go exploring and travel the world together as a family – you never know what you’ll learn! To celebrate, we're launching a special storytime:

Plus, check out some great lists put together by our librarians below.

Also on Wed Jan 27, ABC Life Literacy Canada is hosting a special online event at 4.30pm with author and illustrator Barbara Reid, which will include a demonstration, Q&A, plus a chance to submit your own work inspired by Barbara's clay illustrations for a chance to win prizes. See the link below to register as spaces are limited. Aimed at kids in grades 1 - 6.
