The final installation of the new customer service desks starts today. There will be no dust (yay!) and minimal noise. We expect the job to be completed today, along with the reinstallation of the self checkout units. Painting continues this week.

Update: Thu February 16

We expect the floor polishing to be finished by Friday. In the meantime, please note that there is extra dust in the branch today, and likely tomorrow as well. If you are allergic to dust or have respiratory concerns, you may experience some discomfort during your visit to the library. We are working hard to keep the work area clean and to minimize the dust. We apologize for any inconvenience to you and appreciate your ongoing patience. Thank you. 

Update: Wed February 8

The next—and final!—phase of the flooring project starts on Sat February 11 when the floor will be readied for the poured concrete overlay. After-hours from Monday through Wednesday, polishing will transform the floor, creating a refreshed and modern look in our check-out area. Not only will the new floor look great, it will be easier to care for and more cost efficient than carpeting. We are thrilled to see the finish line and *greatly* appreciate your ongoing patience during the past few months of renovation disruption—thank you!

Update: Thu January 5
Thank you for your continued patience as we work to improve this area. The good news is that the work is progressing as planned and the disruption is only temporary. If you're looking for a quiet place to sit, free from construction activity, there are many comfortable spaces to work on the 2nd and 3rd floors.


Dec 12 - Starting this week until early February, you'll see some changes in action at Central branch. The space will look different but library service and access to collections and rooms will not be affected. Contractors and facilities staff will work hard to make sure that construction areas are kept as clean as possible. We do not expect any disruptive noise or unpleasant odours.

Here's what is planned:

December 12 to end of month: Electrical work in the check-out area. Electrical work will be completed each day before the library opens.

  • part of the customer service area will be closed for safety

January 4 to 6: Concrete polishing of the check-out area floor.

  • check-out desk will be moved to a new temporary location
  • self-check machines, first floor catalogue computer, and photocopier will be unavailable
  • seating limited to the Manget Reading Room
  • concrete dust may result from the polishing process

January 7 to 15: Concrete polishing of the 1st floor customer service area, up to the Manget Reading Room. The floor will look rough and unfinished as the contractors work through the multi-stage process.

Late January to early February: Installation of the new check-out desks and storage units may occur during work hours.
