- Using the Library
UPDATE Feb 29 - We are open with FULL service and will be open from now on, with some minor disruptions for ongoing work this week. Some areas may be temporarily cordoned of as work zones, but this is not expected to affect library service.
It's business as usual for programs, seating, classes, check-in/check-out, information etc. One more BIG thank you to all our valued customers!
UPDATE Feb 26, 2.15pm - The branch is now OPEN until 6pm tonight with very limited service. During today's closure, crews replaced the foyer carpet, returned the shelves to their correct locations, and started unpacking boxes of books. We expect to be open in our full space on Saturday, February 27, from 9am-5pm. Some detail work is still ongoing, so please continue to bear with us as we finish fully restoring the space. Thank you again for your continued patience.
UPDATE Feb 26, 9am - The branch is CLOSED until approximately 2pm this afternoon. We will post our opening time when confirmed. Please watch our social media sites and right here for information.
UPDATE Feb 25 – Alton branch is open today, in a limited service capacity, until 9pm tonight (Thursday). In most of our space, carpeting work is ongoing and baseboards are being installed. After we close this evening and into the morning tomorrow, workers will be removing carpet and furniture from the foyer area.
Carpeting the foyer is scheduled to begin on Friday morning, so Alton will be fully closed on Friday, February 26, 9am to 2pm.
We plan to re-open in a limited service capacity on Friday at 2pm until 6pm, if safe to do so. While open to the public, shelving and furniture will be replaced in the main branch area, and carpeting and associated tasks will be completed.
Before visiting the branch on Friday, please check our website, Facebook, and Twitter for confirmed opening hours. Thank you, as always, for your patience while we finish restoring the branch.
UPDATE Feb 24 - Yesterday, carpet installation started in the central part of the branch and a moving company prepared shelving units to be moved. Today library movers temporarily relocated the fiction collection in order to install carpeting in that area and by the seminar rooms. Preparing the non-fiction collection for a similar move began today. Alton remains open for limited service. There is some noise from power tools that is expected to continue through the rest of the work. We greatly appreciate the continued patience and understanding of our customers.
UPDATE Feb 23 - Installation of replacement carpet starts today. Alton is open in a limited service capacity today, but there will very likely be fully-closed time over the next few days, in order to facilitate carpeting the foyer area. We'll keep you updated here, and on Facebook and Twitter.
UPDATE Feb 18 - Due to restricted access and services at Alton Branch, please note that Fun Fridays on February 19 and Library LEGO and the Puppet Show on Sat February 20 are cancelled. As well, all community room bookings at the branch are cancelled for the remainder of this week.
UPDATE Feb 17, 6pm - Alton Branch will reopen tomorrow, Thu February 18, offering VERY LIMITED library service from 9am to 9pm: returns, holds pick up, and loaning Express items only. There are no seating areas open or study tables available at this time, likely into next week. Full library service will resume as flood restoration work is completed. We're doing our best to get everything back to normal as quickly as we can. Thank you!
UPDATE Feb 16 - Alton Branch is slowly drying after last night's flood, but the concrete and carpets are still damp. We want to make sure musty smells and mold won't be ongoing problems, so the branch will remain closed on Wed February 17. We're very sorry for any inconvenience to you as we work to restore the library. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.
Alton Branch is closed today due to flooding in the library. We apologize for any inconvenience that this emergency closure will cause.
A water sprinkler popped on Monday night that resulted in a large volume of water pooling in the library. A restoration company is currently onsite to extract the water and dry the facility. The flood did not damage the library collection but did affect some furnishings. The flood only affected the library and did not enter the community centre or school.
Later this afternoon, we will know when Alton Branch is expected to open to the public. Stay tuned.
