If the book you want is older that one year, or the item requested is on microfilm, we may be able to borrow it for you from another library system through Interlibrary Loan.
What is Interlibrary Loan?
We offer this service for older titles which may not be available for purchase and are loaned to us from other library systems across Canada.
What can I borrow?
- Books older than one year
- Microfilm, for example, from the provincial archives
Are there any restrictions?

- Recent publications, books published in the last 12 months
- Audiovisual items, such as DVDs, CDs, books-on-CD
- Some high demand subjects like car repair manuals, travel guides, computer books
- Complete magazine issues
- School course material
Loan period: Begins as soon as the material has been received at Burlington Public Library. To have the longest loan period, pick up your item as soon as you know it's available.
Renewal: Limit of one renewal at a time if lending library permits. Contact Burlington Public Library before your due date to request this
How long does it take?
It can take between two to four weeks and sometimes longer to obtain an item through interlibrary loan.
Are there any charges?
- This service is FREE when borrowing items from Ontario Public Libraries but universities and out of province libraries usually charge $10-$15
- Interlibrary loan fine is $1 per day to maximum of $10
