Northeast Branch Project

Responding to growth in northeast Burlington, Burlington Public Library is building a new library branch  at the corner of Tim Dobbie Dr. and Dundas St. opposite Norton Park. This branch will be a unique joint integrated public and high school library located within a 218,500 sq. ft. facility also housing a Halton District School Board high school and a City of Burlington community centre.

Library Branch Named

The Burlington Public Library Board named the new library branch in the northeast tonight.  It will now be called the Alton Library.

High School Named

HDSB Trustees name new high school in Alton.  It will be called the Dr. Frank Hayden Secondary School.

Groundbreaking

This morning BPL CEO Maureen Barry, project team members, and Library Board Vice Chair Nancy Douglas, gathered with important members of partner teams from the Halton District School Board and the City of Burlington to celebrate the groundbreaking of the City's largest joint community projects to date. Milestone Reached - Tender Awarded!

 

On Wednesday, August 17, 2011 Halton District School Board awarded tender to Bondfield Construction for the building of the Alton Facility.  In a ceremony at City Hall, HDSB,  Burlington Public Library and the City of Burlington signed the legal agreements regarding the land leases, construction and future operation of the new Alton Facility.  Watch for exciting photos and updates when construction begins!

  • April - Halton District School Board, City of Burlington and the Burlington Public Library begin exploring the idea of a complex made up of a high school, joint integrated library (high school and public library) and a community centre
  • June - Alton Community Centre and Library Feasibility Study – Public Open House
  • July - Library Board, School Board and City Council reach agreement and understanding to go forward with the project.
  • July - Design phase begins
  • Fall - Community and staff Consultation

  • January - HDSB holds open houses with partners BPL and City of Burlington to introduce the facility to incoming Grade 9 and Grade 10 Alton High School students
  • February - HDSB holds an open house for potential HDSB teachers with partners BPL and City of Burlington to introduce the Alton High School and facility including the Joint Integrated Library
  • April 17 - HDSB names new high school in Alton. It will be called the Dr. Frank Hayden Secondary School.
  • April 18 - BPL names the new library branch in the northeast.  It will be called the Alton Library
