How to Use the Burlington History Index

The Burlington History Index is a retrieval tool for BPL's non-digitized materials primarily located in the Burlington History Room at Central Library. Content includes mainly Burlington and Oakville/Halton County information, but also Hamilton and Wentworth County landmarks and events as they have linked to our past. New items will continue to be added regularly.

This subject index is only one of numerous resources available to the researcher, and should be used in addition to the many other local history resources, such as:

Catalogued materials - These items are listed in the library catalogue and may be searched by Title, Author and/or Subject. Particular topics of local interest have been identified from within a number of these materials and included in this index. These materials may be shelved in the Burlington History Room, or with our regular non-fiction collections mainly at Central Library.

Non-catalogued materials - Identification of and access to the content in these documents in the Burlington History Room is available ONLY through this alphabetical index.

Resources

  • an extensive vertical file collection of uncatalogued pamphlets, newspaper clippings
  • scrapbooks and other materials donated by current or former citizens of Burlington or assembled by Library staff and volunteers
  • Tweedsmuir Histories (Halton Branch, Nelson Branch, Campbellville Branch) are available on microfilm and special items have been selected for indexing
  • selected references from books on our local history, many of which are reference and must be used in the library

  • (BUR) = resource is located in the Burlington History Room only
  • (REF) = item is shelved in our non-fiction area, but must be used in-library only
