Computer Classes
General Information
The Library supports lifelong learning and offers a wide range of classes in the Ron Ness Training Room at Central Library:
- Hands-on instruction with your own computer
- Sensitive instructors provide you with a take home guide
- Encouraging environment and small class sizes
- Easy access: Ground level entrance, automated doors, wheelchair accessible
Most classes are single sessions for 90 minutes; Library Catalogue Basics and Creating a Web Page are 2 hours.

- You can register at any location. At Central Library, visit us on the 3rd floor.
- Payment is due at the time of registration. Sorry, no telephone registrations accepted.
- A minimum of 3 people per session is required to run the class.
- All sessions are $5 unless noted and include your own take-home step-by-step guide.
- Cancel at least 48 hours in advance to receive a full refund.

Computer Basics |
For the absolute beginner, this class introduces you to basic computer terminology. By the end of the class, you will be able to identify parts of a computer and recognize the difference between hardware and software, turn the computer on and off, identify the parts of the desktop, use a mouse to navigate, and open and close computer programs. No prerequisite. |

File Management Basics |
Learn how to work with files on a Windows XP computer. You will develop a basic understanding of file structure, digital storage sizes and terminology, and how to use computer storage devices such as USB flash drives, floppy disks, and computer drives. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills. |

Introduction to the Internet |
Learn the basic sills you need to get started on the World Wide Web, including an overview of what the Internet is and how it works, clicking on links, getting to a web site when you know its address, and using a search engine to conduct a simple search. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills. |

Intermediate Internet |
Building on the skills you developed in Introduction to the Internet, by the end of this class you will know how to navigate web sites, search for web sites using Google, recognize different types of web sites, evaluate web sites and use online forms. Prerequisite: Strong mousing and basic web searching skills.

Advanced Internet |
Going beyond the basics, this class includes what to consider when searching for information online, a review of Google searching and a new look at its advanced search options, an introduction to other search engines and meta-search engines, how to use online tools such as directories and web portals, and an introduction to library databases. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills and web search experience.

Online Databases 101 (formerly The Invisible Web) |
Learn how to find articles from magazines and newspapers and plenty of other great resources. You will learn about three popular online databases that you can view from home or at the library: EBSCO’s MasterFile Premier, eLibrary Canada, and GALE’s Health and Wellness Resource Center. Topics include basic and advanced searching, how to find particular publications, and using special database features. Prerequisite: Web search experience. |

Creating a Web Page |
We teach you how to create a simple web page from scratch using HTML code, so you can showcase a hobby, family pictures, or just get an understanding about the basic makeup of a web page. This course does not cover putting your pages on the web; however, we do discuss some resources that can help you do so. Please note: This class is for adults. Prerequisite: Web search experience and good typing skills. |

MS Word 2007 |
An introduction to word processing using Microsoft Word 2007, a program that allows you to type attractive documents. The class covers important keys on the keyboard, moving text without retyping it by cutting, copying, and pasting, correcting errors, changing the appearance of your text, inserting pictures into your documents, and saving and printing your creations. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills and familiarity with the keyboard. |

More MS Word 2007 |
Move beyond basic word processing and learn to improve the appearance of your documents. Topics include creating bulleted and ordered lists, inserting accented letters and special symbols, creating tables, formatting pictures, spell checking and finding words in your document, and changing margins and other page settings. Prerequisite: Basic typing skills, strong mousing skills, and previous use of MS Word 2007. |

MS Excel 2007 |
An introduction to spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel 2007, a program that allows you to store, organize, and manipulate data. This class covers the basics of working with spreadsheets, entering data into cells, calculating with functions, and formatting your work. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills, familiarity with the keyboard, and experience using MS Word 2003 or 2007. |

Library Catalogue Basics (formerly Find it @ BPL) |
The library catalogue is the key to finding all the great items in our collection. Learn how to search for an item, helpful strategies and tips that make searching for items easy and effective, how to place and edit hold items, and how to manage your library account. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills.

Digital Drivers Computer Camp |
Get caught speeding on the information highway! Learn the basics and beyond of surfing the Internet. Start your engines with Introduction to the Internet, pick up your pace through Intermediate Internet, and zip to the finish line with Advanced Internet. This FREE six hour class is held over three days as part of I’ll Show You How Week. Pre-registration required, limited space. For people with no previous Internet experience. Prerequisite: Strong mousing skills. |
