Burlington Public Library offers different reading programs
from the Ontario Library Association's Forest of Reading
Blue Spruce, Silver Birch, Red Maple, and White Pine. Contact any Burlington
Public Library location for details of Forest of Reading programs.
The Blue Spruce program is intended for children in kindergarten to grades 2. The Blue Spruce Award is for children aged 4 to 7, who are in kindergarten to grade two. Ten Canadian picture books are nominated, and the children must read (or have read to them) all ten books. Click here for the 2010 nominated titles. Children must be registered in the Blue Spruce Book Club, in order to vote for the winner. Please call branches for details.
The Silver Birch and Silver Birch Express programs are intended for children in grades 3, 4, 5, or 6. The Silver Birch program offers two categories fiction and non-fiction and you may participate in either category, or in both. Silver Birch is aimed at children in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Silver Birch Express program is aimed at the Grade 3 - 4 reading level, and offers a single list that combines fiction and non-fiction. Click here for the 2010 nominated titles.
Any student in grades 3-6 may choose either program. Just register at any Burlington Public Library location, then read at least five of the ten nominated books in the category (or categories) you choose and vote for your favourite in April.

The Red Maple program is aimed at students in grades 7 and 8. The Red Maple program includes ten novels. Just read at least five of the ten
nominated books and vote for your favourite! Register by Feb 28th to be able to vote for your favourite. Voting day is in April. Click here for 2010 nominated titles (Fiction). Join the Red Maple Book Club which meets monthly from January until April. Phone 905-639-3611 ext 125 to register.
