Teams | Questions | Answers | Scoring

Teams

  • Each team will consist of six players composed as evenly as possible of members from grades 3 to 5 for a Junior team, grades 6 to 8 for a Senior team.
  • Teams may not have more than two members from the highest grade level playing at any time. However, you may include more team members from the lower grade in your category to make up a team.
  • Additional members designated as Substitutes are permitted - one per grade, to a maximum of three. A team may have up to nine members; only six members at a time will play a round. This rule must be strictly adhered to to ensure fairness.
  • There is no "time out" for substitutions. Coaches must make substitutions before the rounds begin.
  • One team member is designated as the Spokesperson. The Spokesperson will be invited to introduce the team members before each round begins. The team is encouraged to quietly discuss possible answers. However, it is the Spokesperson who puts forward the team's answer.

Questions

  • Each team will be asked an equal number of questions. A practice question with no point value will be given to each team at the beginning of the first round.
  • The questions will be addressed to the teams alternately regardless of which team gave the last correct answer.
  • Each round will consist of questions from any of the following categories:
    • Award winner
    • Canadian
    • Character
    • Classic
    • Popular
    • Folk/Fairy Tale
    • Junior Fiction
    • Myth/Legend (for Seniors)
    • New Title (within the last two years)
    • Picture Book (for Juniors)

Answers

  • A team has 30 seconds to give the title AND/OR the author of the book. You do not have to know the title in order to try for author points. Character questions require the name of the character only.
  • The question will be asked once, then the timing will start. During this time the team may ask to have the question repeated, and may give as many guesses as it wishes through the Spokesperson.
  • After 30 seconds have elapsed, the Scorekeeper will shout Time. If a Spokesperson is giving an answer when Time is heard, she/he may finish the answer.
  • If, at the end of 30 seconds, the team is not able to answer correctly, the opposing team must give the answer immediately. The question will not be repeated for the opposing team. If team A has correctly answered only the title, Team B may give the author.
  • Author surname is sufficient. In the case of joint authorship, any one surname is required.
  • Title must be exact. The Moderator's decision will be final in the case of any team answer which may be questionable.

Scoring

  • Five (5) points will be given to the team correctly identifying the title.
  • Three (3) points will be given for identifying the author's surname. The author's first name is not necessary.
  • Two (2) points will be given when the opposing team answers with a correct title OR when the opposing team answers with a correct character name.
  • One (1) point will be given when the opposing team answers with a correct author surname. The author's first name is not necessary.
  • There is no penalty for guessing.
  • In the event of a tie, teams will be asked tie-breaker questions until the tie is broken.
