Database FAQs

How do I access these databases?

To access these databases from inside the Library, click on a Subject and select a database from the list provided. You can also connect directly to a database using the Fast Access drop down menu above. If you aren't in the library, you will be asked to enter your 14 digit barcode number from your library card (no spaces).

How do I know which database is the best one to use for what I'm searching for?

Use Databases by Subject on the right and read through the summaries to help you select a suitable database for your research.

Do you have a list of all databases?

Use the Fast Access drop down menu above to browse a complete alphabetical list.

How do I find an article from a particular magazine or newspaper?

Use our Database Coverage page to see if the publication you're looking for is listed. That will help get you started using the correct database. However, the publications listed represent a very small number of those indexed. Each database provides a listing of publications indexed.

Why may more than one database be displayed when I select a database?

Some Subject links will take you to a listing of databases supplied by a vendor or publisher. You may choose to search one of these databases at a time, or you may choose to search across (or cross-search) a number of databases at once. If you prefer to go directly to a specific database without browsing a product list, choose the database name from the Quick Access drop down menu.

HELP! What do I do if I can't find information on a topic?

Be flexible and creative with your searching. Start with a broad topic, and then narrow your search. Try and think of different words or terms that may retrieve more results. Consider alternative spellings. Use the HELP pages provided by the database companies to search more effectively, and discover numerous functions offered by the databases. For further assistance, call your library location during regular open hours.

Will I always find the complete article?

Databases searching magazine and newspaper articles may provide full text, or citations only. You may be able to select results to include full text only.
